"LOST INNOCENCE"
£545.00
"Lost Innocence" Wall Art Print - is an evocative piece, a photograph taken from Bran's original physical AK-47 sculpture created in 2015 after his challenging trip to Sierra Leone. Reflecting on the experience, Bran remarked, "It was one of the most difficult trips I had made."
The messages on the love heart sweets in this artwork are drawn from interviews Bran conducted with child soldiers in Sierra Leone. He asked them about their actions, reasons for being there, and who they would die for.
During the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991-2002), an estimated 10,000-14,000 children were forced into combat, fighting on both sides. Nearly half of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and a quarter of the government armed forces comprised children aged 8-14, with the AK-47 being the predominant weapon used.
Symbolic Elements:
- Married Couple: Represents the displacement and separation of families and parents.
- Diploma Scroll: Symbolizes the lack of access to education for child soldiers.
- Hearts: Reflects the absence of love and nurturing in the lives of these children.
- Toys: Represents the loss of innocence and childhood.
- Chocolate Bar: Symbolizes humble luxuries that are out of reach for these children.
- 3x White Doves: Represents the loss of freedom to play and grow freely.
- Blood: Symbolic of the destruction and pain caused by the conflict.
This artwork poignantly captures the harsh realities faced by child soldiers and the profound impact of conflict on their lives, urging viewers to reflect on these pressing issues.
